HUMANS WE HEART: ARTIST CARIS REID
We’re always eager to get a peek inside the studios of artists we admire. So on our last trip to LA, we just *had* to catch up with the supertalented Caris Reid. Have a look at her colorful space, plus learn about what’s been inspiring her work, the spots she recommends visiting, how she stays grounded and more.
Hi, Caris! Let’s start with the basics. What do you do and where do you live?
Hi! I’m a painter and a tarot reader living in Los Angeles.
Will you share some of your go-tos?
Coffee order:
A latte in the morning and a chai latte later in the day
Outfit:
Black jeans and a T-shirt
Weekend plan:
Going for a hike and checking out art openings around LA
Album/playlist:
I’m obsessed with Weyes Blood’s new album, Titanic Rising
Neighborhood spot(s):
Civil Coffee, Amara Cafe for a healthy lunch, Good Housekeeping for a glass of wine
Have you always been an artist?
I was a really creative kid, always drawing, writing, painting—and I just never stopped. I went to art school in Boston and have been pursuing my path as a painter ever since.
What’s been inspiring you lately?
Botanical gardens. I love the sense of organization paired with something so inherently wild. LA has a lot of wonderful ones—the gardens at The Huntington are a favorite. I’m also inspired by Emma Kunz and her geometric drawings.
Is there anything special you like to do to recharge?
I meditate—there’s a meditation garden not far from my studio that I go to often.
Lastly, tell us about a human you heart.
My grandma, Betty. She’s the most effusive person I’ve ever met. She has eight kids and over 25 grandchildren, yet she’s always finding room to add one extra person to the table and to her heart.
Thanks, Caris. Get to know more of our friends in past interviews.
