Original, limited-edition designs? Sign. Us. Up. For our very first Madewell In Residence series, we collabed with artists we’re obsessed with (and that we think you’ll looove too) on exclusive tees, bandanas, towels and prints—which you can have custom framed, thanks to our pals at Framebridge. Get to know more about the inspo behind each mini collection straight from the creators themselves.
THE INSPO: “Nature documentaries about Hawaii were a big influence on these pieces—footage of volcanoes spilling into the ocean, hummingbirds in a rain forest. I wanted to capture some of that wild and fragile nature. I also looked into the history of surfing and discovered the story of Rell Sunn, a pioneer in the world of women’s surfing. Very cool lady.”
THE INSPO: “I've always loved combining abstraction with portraiture, and I'm especially drawn to drawing women. This collection is my interpretation of strong femininity. I like to think of the pieces complementing each other like a group of best friends.”
THE INSPO: “I've always loved coconuts, and since living in Los Angeles, I've become really excited about native Mexican fruits—many of which grow here in my own backyard! Tropical fruits are so beautiful and show up often in the early European botanical illustrations I turn to for inspiration again and again.”
