Garment-dyed tees. Garment-dyed jeans. Garment-dyed sweatshirts. As you can probably tell, we’re big fans of a certain technique. But what does garment-dyed actually mean? And why do we love it so much? Allow us to explain.
WHAT IT IS
Usually, clothes are made out of fabric that’s been dyed, cut and then sewn together. But with garment-dyeing, it’s reversed: The tee or pair of jeans is fully sewn together and then dyed—which is why you’ll often notice that the thread of the clothing perfectly matches the rest of the fabric.
WHY WE LIKE IT
IT’S ONE-OF-A-KIND
Garment-dyed clothes are like fingerprints—no two are exactly the same. That’s because, depending on how and where each piece sits in the dye bath, there may be slight variations in the end color’s intensity.
IT GETS BETTER OVER TIME
Garment-dyed clothing gets a unique dimensional quality the more you wear it—one you won’t see in other items. Translation: It’ll look worn-in, not worn-out.
IT’S SERIOUSLY SOFT
As part of the process, garment-dyed pieces are washed and dried two times before they find their way to your closet—which not only helps soften the clothes but also gives them that lived-in look we love.
