LET’S TALK
Feat. Denny Balmaceda
Describe your style in three words.
A movie character, a king chameleon and a connoisseur of juxtaposed fashion.
As we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, we're eager to learn how your heritage and experience plays into your work and approach to style. Can you speak to that?
I create looks that inspire me. For example, I’m Filipino. I’ve always loved how Filipino uncles from the ’80s and ’90s would style themselves. It’s the tucked-in polo, the woven belt with light wash denim and my personal staple, the trucker hat. That’s my homage.
Do you have any favorite ways of styling denim?
I love denim on denim. The ‘90s aesthetic: oversized blazer, light wash jeans, white socks and loafers.
You’re known for your eclectic and polished looks. Where did your love for fashion come from?
I loved dressing up ever since I was a kid. I think my love for fashion is a culmination of my other interests like art, music and movies. I just started treating myself as the canvas. Your personal style is an art form on its own.
Where do you find the spark for a new idea or your next great fit?
I get in phases, and I stick with them until I want to move on. I’m back in my preppy phase right now. I watch old films, look at old records and vintage fashion ads. I always put my own twist on it though, whether it’s a cowboy hat or sneakers with a suit.
If you could give one piece of style advice to your audience, what would it be?
Always dress for you. If you love it, then the confidence will be there. Confidence is the best accessory.
